I paid a hefty capital gains tax on my mutual funds because my mutual funds sold stock in 2007. I then sold the mutual fund at the end of the year and had to pay even more tax because of the gain in value. With so much tax to be paid I would have been better off in a CD.

I know what the difference between stock and bonds are, I just want to know what is the best way to invest? Often the ‘investment advisors / fund manager’ to a mutual fund have zero risk, they advise, and get a management fee as a % of net assets, irrespective of the actual performance of the fund.

If the fund manager themselves owned large parts of the fund I would think they would be better aligned with mutual fund shareholders.
