Basically, if I put $20 towards a stock, if the company is still around in 10 years will I make a bunch of money? Or if I invest in something like Hannah Montana, will I not get anything in ten years since she won’t be popular?

I do have some knowledge about stocks, because I watch business news quite often. But I am a little afraid to invest on my own because I’ve never done it before.

So, should i buy stocks on my own or should i keep purchasing mutual funds? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

I’m not asking how mutual funds make — or lose — money for their clients. I’m asking how they make their own money. If I use Etrade to buy or sell Vanguard mutual fund, for example, I am charged $20.00 commission. Is that the only way they make money? Doesn’t seem like a lot, although I do understand they have a lot of clients.
